Anatomical changes due to uptake and accumulation of Zn and Cd in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea)

چکیده
Anatomical and physiological changes in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) plants due to uptake and accumulation of Zn and Cd were investigated. Potted plants were exposed to metal treatments of Zn and Cd for 15 and 16 days, respectively. Leaves, stems and roots were harvested for studying anatomy and analyzing metal accumulation. Anatomical changes were documented using light microscopy, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. Accumulation of Zn and Cd in all parts of the plant increased significantly with an increase in applied metal concentration. Microscopic studies revealed clotted depositions in roots and stems, break down of parenchyma cells, and a decrease in starch content in leaves of plants treated with high concentrations of Zn. Physiological and morphological changes of Zn-treated plants included a significant decrease in relative water content, dry weight and plant height. Cd at higher concentrations resulted in structural changes only in stems and roots. Mustard plants a Z m b ©

Heavy metal toxicity: Effect on plant growth, biochemical parameters and metal accumulation by Brassica juncea L.
Plant growth, pigment concentration, biochemical parameters and uptake of heavy metals were determined for Brassica juncea L. in response to cadmium and lead stress. The plant exhibited a decline in growth, chlorophyll content and carotenoids with Cd and Pb but Cd was found to be more detrimental than Pb treatment in B. juncea. The protein content was decreased by Cd (900 μM) to 95% and 44% by ...

Transgenic Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.] plants overproducing the enzymes gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase (ECS) or glutathione synthetase (GS) were shown previously to have increased levels of the metal-binding thiol peptides phytochelatins and glutathione, and enhanced Cd tolerance and accumulation. Furthermore, transgenic Indian mustard plants overexpressing adenosine triphos...
متن کاملAlleviation of Cadmium Toxicity in Brassica juncea L. (Czern. & Coss.) by Calcium Application Involves Various Physiological and Biochemical Strategies
Calcium (Ca) plays important role in plant development and response to various environmental stresses. However, its involvement in mitigation of heavy metal stress in plants remains elusive. In this study, we examined the effect of Ca (50 mM) in controlling cadmium (Cd) uptake in mustard (Brassica juncea L.) plants exposed to toxic levels of Cd (200 mg L(-1) and 300 mg L(-1)). The Cd treatment ...

Lead and cadmium accumulation examined in shoot and leaf tissues of seedlings of mustard (Brassica juncea cv RH-30), at 7th day, treated with either putrescine (1 mM), or ammonium nitrate (10 mM) or IAA (10 microM). These were included in the nutrient medium, containing Pb or Cd (0.1 mM and 2 mM). Metal accumulation was more in shoot than in leaf tissues, which was increased manifold under sali...
